Description: This collection of 47 vocal works from the 12th to the 17th centuries will be a joy to all medieval and Renaissance music enthusiasts. Nine of the works are liturgical and include "Sanctus" by Henry IV and "Agnus Dei" from a beautiful four-part mass by Thomas Tallis. England's long tradition of popular religious lyric poetry is represented by such part songs as William Byrd's "Susanna Fayre" and Thomas Raven-scroft's "O Lord, Turne Not Away Thy Face" and "Remember O Thou Man". Secular music also burgeoned in the 16th century, much of it issuing from courtly centers where music and letters were cultivated. Such a group of poets and musicians surrounded Henry VIII, who is represented in this collection with two charming songs, "With Owt Dyscorde" and "O My Hart", The collection -- edited by Noah Greenberg, founder and former director of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua -- covers a broad range of mood, from the hearty "Blow Thy Horne Hunter by Cornysh to the reflective and elegiac "Cease Mine Eyes" by Thomas Morley. Among the other notable composers of Tudor and Elizabethan England represented here are Orlando Gibbons, John Dowland, and Thomas Weelkes.
