Description:
In a convent in Winchester, around 900 AD, a nun works at her desk in the cold, dark days of early Spring, copying a cycle of Passion prayers that have been in use for many years. Taken from an Anglo-Saxon source whose precise origins are lost to history, these prayers became part of the Nunnaminster Manuscript, now held in the British Museum. The prayers are full of vigour and mystery, personal but not sentimental, with a Celtic exuberance which blended the physical with the spiritual. They are among the first prayers written by women for their regular use. David Scott recounts his own discovery and translation of these prayers, providing biblical passages and a meditation for each one.
