Description:
In this handsome volume, author Bertrand Lemoine traces the extraordinary architecture of 19th-century France. The glories of the period are captured in more than 170 photographs and drawings, most in full color.
In the 19th century, architects mined the past, drawing on the Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, and also looked to the future for inspiration. The Napoleonic era gave birth to Neoclassical monuments that recall Imperial Rome. The grand projects of the Second Empire created much of the Paris we know today: Charles Garnier's lavish Opera House, the expanded Louvre, and the stately boulevards of Baron Haussmann's city plan. New technology revolutionized architecture and spawned marvelous iron-and-glass train stations, covered markets, exhibition halls, and department stores -- buildings that catered to a newly industrialized society -- and milestones such as Henri Labrouste's libraries and Gustave Eiffel's famed tower. The end of the century saw the rise of Art Nouveau, exemplified by Hector Guimard's flamboyant Paris Metro stations.
