-- An in-depth portrait of presidential aspirant Benjamin F. Butler
The Army of the James has been relegated to a footnote in the history of our most important war. Perhaps the easiest explanation for the dearth of historical attention given it was its combat record, having lost virtually every campaign, battle, and engagement it fought. Yet, General Butler's army was striking in its make-up: it had the most highly politicized leadership in the Union army and it was one of the first to fully incorporate African-American soldiers.
With over ten years of meticulous research invested in it, "Army of Amateurs" finally will give scholars and Civil War buffs alike an opportunity to place this forgotten army in its proper context.
