Description:
In the late summer of 1944, two United States and one British airborne divisions landed, by parachute and glider, behind German lines with orders to seize all the canal and river crossings between Eindhoven and Arnhem. At Arnhem, "the bridge too far, " the British 1st Airborne was surrounded, cut off from reinforcements, and subjected to a week of unbridled bombardment and infantry attacks. Fewer than a quarter of the 10,000 troops made it back to Allied lines. In this new interpretation of one of the most famous of all World War II actions, both German and Allied sources are examined to show how flaws in planning combined with the unexpected vigor of the German counterattack to defeat an operation that could have shortened the war by months. Excellent maps and period photography illustrate this eminently readable and concise account of one of the most devastating Allied losses suffered in the European campaign.
