Description:
Bernard Schmidt developed the Schmidt telescope based on the innovative idea of using a spherical mirror instead of a parabolic one. The result was an extremely large field of view and good resolution. The Schmidt system represented a decisive advance in the development of the technology of astronomical telescopes. Astrophotography with the Schmidt Telescope reviews the history and achievements of this type of telescope. It includes a portfolio of 43 photographic plates produced by large Schmidt telescopes, in particular the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory, Tautenberg, but also the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the European Southern Observatory. The book contains photographs of galactic nebulae of different species, galactic and globular clusters of stars, stellar fields, external galaxies and comets. Facing each photograph is a text which introduces the object to the reader and explains its appearance, characteristic data and its physical nature. Extensive information on the history of the astronomical telescope, the Schmidt telescope and the life of its inventor is given in the accompanying chapters.
