Subsistence farming is vanishing in the county, and as it does, residents, who trace their ancestry to the 1750s, worry about losing a life they cherish and the social direction of their own community. A non-profit organization has determined to "advance mountain culture" taking as its mandate the backwardness of Appalachians. A vision of mythic Appalachia is what draws all the elements of the book together. In the end, O'Brien comes to terms with his father's life -- a man forced to leave his beloved Appalachia in order to provide for his family, rendering him, in the end, defeated -- and he comes to understand that he himself had to settle in Appalachia in order to reconnect with his father and to find his own soul.
