These traditional Nuevo Mexicano tales -- including Usner's renditions of "La Tierra de Mogollo" and "El Pastorcillo" -- are part of an oral tradition spanning the Old World and New. In the years Benigna Ortega Chavez grew up hearing and remembering them, storytelling was an important aspect of life in northern New Mexico. Usner's appreciation of this fact animated him to write a book that would not only record the stories, but would do so in the context of his grandmother's role as narrator.
Presented in bilingual format, and illustrated with original drawings and photographs, this book is an important addition to the Nuevo Mexicano narrative tradition, and a tribute to a master storyteller.
