Description: Best remembered for his spellbinding "last sitting" images of Marilyn Monroe, Bert Stern personified the commercial photographer as cultural hero in the 1960s. Hugely successful in the worlds of fashion and advertising, Stern was as much in demand as Avedon and Penn but was much more flamboyant and, ultimately, more enigmatic.

Bert Stern: Adventures collects 160 of this photographer's classic images -- and takes us on a remarkable roller-coaster ride across the decades. Here are Stern's innovative advertising images, like the Egyptian pyramid seen inverted in a martini glass for a 1950s Smirnoff campaign. And here too is an alluring gallery of celebrated actresses and models, from Elizabeth Taylor and Drew Barrymore to Twiggy and Iman. These striking images reflect the remarkable graphic simplicity of Stern's photographic art, as well as his extraordinary rapport with beautiful women.

Robert A. Sobieszek's essay recounts the story of Stern's rise from a Brooklyn childhood to the pinnacle of success and glamour in Manhattan, as well as his spectacular fall from grace, and puts his achievements in context.
