Cassidy's Run: the Secret Spy War Over Nerve Gas
- Binding: Hardcover
- Publisher: Random House Trade
- Publish date: 03/07/2000
For one thing, Shocker was intended to trick the Soviets into believing that the United States was ahead in the battle to build lethal nerve gases. But the FBI and the Army also wanted to learn how the Soviet military intelligence operated in the United States, and who its agents were, including the three Soviet "illegals, " spies operating without benefit of diplomatic cover, who were normally almost impossible to detect.
The game was highly successful, but there were failures as well. The government was ready to arrest two Russian spies but bungled badly and let them escape. And Shocker may have had unintended consequences, among them the motivation for the Soviets to develop more powerful nerve gas.
None of this story has been told before. All of the details, the names, the places, the information exchanged -- all of it will be revealed in Cassidy's Run for the first time.
