In Maine to visit his girlfriend for the weekend, Boston lawyer Brady Coyne gives Charlotte Gillespie, a middle-aged black woman he meets walking by the side of the road and carrying a sick dog, a ride to the local vet's office. The dog later dies, presumably from poisoning, and Brady gets a note from Gillespie, saying only that she needs to see him. But when he goes to visit her, he finds her cabin devoid of life and swastikas spray-painted around her property. With only suspicions to go on, Brady must pierce the veil of silence in the small town if he is to find out what has happened in this seemingly idyllic place.
