Description: In the early 1930s, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Willard Van Dyke, Imogen Cunningham, and other important photographers came together to form a group known as f.64, creating the most influential photographic movement of the time. Dedicated to the functional aesthetic of the camera, the group was formed in response to the "artistic", soft-focus, pictorial photography which was popular at the time. "Straight" photography was the hallmark of Group f.64. Emphasizing sharp images, maximum depth-of-field, and smooth glossy printing paper, their works were underscored by the unique qualities of the photographic process. This book collects over 150 duotone images highlighting Group f.64's accomplishments -- a body of work which signaled the true beginning of the modernist movement that wound define American photography for the next forty years In addition to Susan Ehrens' detailed essay, Defining Modernism also includes a chronology, bibliography, and biographies of the eleven featured photographers. Photographers include Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, John Paul Edwards, Sonya Noskowiak, Henry Swift, Willard Van Dyke, Edward Weston, Preston Holder, Consuelo Kanaga, Alma Lavenson, and Brett Weston.
