Description:
Joyce Glassman (now Johnson) was a twenty-one year old aspiring novelist when she met thirty-four year old author Jack Kerouac in January of 1957. Jack was womanless and dead broke, and at the suggestion of Allen Ginsberg he called Joyce; their first date was at a Howard Johnson's in the Village. The letters and postcards gathered in this book movingly document the two year, on-again off-again relationship between Kerouac and Glassman. The period was a crucial time for Kerouac; it had been six years since his one and only book had been published, but the Fall 1957 release by Viking of On the Road brought him lasting fame and notoreity. During this period, Kerouac was his usual restless self; he could only live from moment to moment and would come and go in Joyce's life. Joyce, tough and wise and courageous beyond her years, held down a series of publishing jobs, and deeply loved Kerouac, struggling to take care of his changing moods, but finally broke up with him in November of 1958.
