Description: Jack Reacher is hitchhiking through deserted West Texas when he's picked up by a Mexican American woman. Carmen Greer makes an unusual travelling companion: she's strikingly beautiful, but also nervous, cagey and not a little frightened. She tells Reacher about the Greers, the rich clan she's married into. They own and run most of Echo County, Texas, and have made her life -- and her young daughter's -- a living hell. Her husband, the family scion, is about to be released from prison in a matter of days (after serving time for tax evasion) and Carmen tells Reacher that if she doesn't find a way out of her marriage and out of town -- and quickly -- she's afraid she and her daughter won't make it out alive, period. Reacher agrees to follow her to the family ranch to pick up her daughter. But when the husband's lawyer disappears -- his Mercedes found empty on the shoulder of a desert road -- and the husband is shot to death before he's been home 24 hours, Carmen is caught before she can make her escape. She is arrested for her husband's murder and the DA, an old family friend, tells Reacher everything Carmen has told him is a lie. Reacher thinks it's possible she's lying, but can he just walk away? Reacher finds everyone has a reason to lie -- and a reason to kill -- in this forgotten Texas town.
