Introducing Hillary -- a hen deserving of a little dignity -- and Edmund -- a resourceful young pig who is the best friend a hen could ever wish for. Edmund and Hillary reside happily, along with their other animal friends, on China Plate Farm. Life is good until Hillary decides that her ear-less state (a hen with ears?) is no longer acceptable. Edmund, good friend that he is, comes to her aid with one of his Great Ideas -- ears fashioned from a pair of rather fetching spoons. The new ears are coolly admired -- Hillary feels so much more dignified than the other hens -- but her new ears make it rather difficult, even dangerous, to be a hen. (Imagine how narrow the door to a hen house is!) With Hillary's artful knack for executing graceful defeat and delicate diplomacy, she manages to lose the ears and keep both her own and Edmund's dignity completely intact. Of course, Edmund now has this strange notion that a pig without wings is indeed a sorry creature (a pig who can fly?)...
A story about friendship, acceptance and learning from experience, Edmund and Hillary is warmly funny without being frenetically silly. Chris Jackson writes and illustrates with a gentle respect for both his characters and his young audience to create a tale that has all the ear marks of a new favorite.
