Description: Essential XUL Programming takes a tutorial approach to programming with XUL. It uses real world examples, including building an e-commerce web site, to teach beginning and advanced concepts. The book will also act as a reference for developers after they have learned how to use XUL. The open source community will also be driven to the book by the companion site XULtool.com, where the first Java interface for XUL will be developed. Two other companion sites will offer references and updates to the book.

The book contains four major parts:

1. Introduction: The first part gets you started with definitions for key XUL terminology, information to get started writing XUL code, tips on how to extend user interfaces with XBL (eXtensible Binding Language), and a brief introduction to XML and Cascading Style Sheets.

2. Tutorials: The first tutorial covers simple XUL concepts and elements to build a sample e-commerce site interface. The second tutorial creates an information portal in an application using the Mozilla browser.

3. Extending XUL: This part shows you how to extend XUL to create more sophisticated applications, including extending it into the Java platform and other non-Netscape user interfaces using real-world examples.

4. References: This part will relate technologies like Resource Description Framework, Document Object Model, Application Object Model, and XPToolKit to each other, point readers to other important sources of information in the XUL community, and offer references to key elements, code, and a glossary.

The companion web site will actually be a link to 3 distinct URLs:
-- An original, open source application that will allow Java developers to use XUL tocreate Swing interfaces (XULtool.com)
-- A searchable reference guide to key XUL terms and topics (XULguide.com)
-- Updates and corrections to the book (XULbook.com)
