Description:
The European Union's Social Chapter signed at Amsterdam in June 1997 has, for the first time, formally added a "social dimension" to the essentially economic European Community Treaties. This new book explores the emerging themes of the Union's social policy -- employee participation, sex equality and anti-discrimination laws, minimum standards of employment protection, and health and safety in the workplace. The author explains how the Social Chapter offers a novel vehicle for adopting laws by means of agreements between "management and labour" at European level and for considerably expanding the scope of Community social law. As the European Union seeks to adjust to the need to make labor markets more "flexible", the author evaluates the prospects for the future development of European social policy in the context of the Union's wider employment and competitiveness goals.
