Description:
On July 18, 1947, American reporter Ruth Gruber was on the dock in Haifa, Palestine, when the refugee ship Exodus 1947 limped into harbor. An unarmed vessel crammed with 4,500 survivors of the concentration camps, it had been rammed at sea and boarded by sailors from the British Navy determined to keep its human cargo from reaching refuge in Palestine. For the next few months Gruber followed these displaced persons from Haifa to Cyprus to Marseilles, France, and Hamburg, Germany. Originally published in 1948 and titled Destination Palestine, Exodus 1947, based on her eyewitness reporting, is a powerful account of the plight of the refugees and their suffering. Gruber's riveting dispatches and vivid photographs were sent back to the New York Herald-Tribune, which then circulated them out to the world press, leading to the publication of this book one year later.
