Description:
Expanding the Circle concentrates on work created by eminent Haida artist guud san glans, Robert Davidson, between 1986 and 1998. Included are photographs of a 20-foot outdoor totem pole, Breaking the Totem Barrier. Totem poles are traditionally frontal, with uncarved or hollowed-out backs. Davidson decisively broke with tradition to carve this pole in the round. There are also many of the maquettes for the totem poles Davidson has produced Since 1977, along with sketches and finished drawings. Together, they offer new insights into the carving process and its intellectual framework.
