Description:
The Sydney to Hobart yacht race is one of the world's major sporting events. In 1998, it became one of the world's major sporting disasters. On December 26th, as a 115-boat fleet gathered for the start in Sydney Harbor, the 35-knot "buster" forecast to blow through the following day suggested to no one that the race should be postponed. But the gale that descended in the predawn hours of December 27 was anything but routine.
Expand description
The unseasonal storm stretched over 900 miles from Australia to New Zealand, bringing with it hurricane strength winds and five-story waves. In all, 57 sailors were rescued, plucked from the decks of broken boats or from the sea itself under impossible conditions. Six sailors died.
Rob Mundle had unequaled access to the people behind this story, and the result is a tale of raw adventure, and of the emotions of survivors, rescuers, and the bereaved.
