Description:
The development of psychiatric problems in patients with epilepsy is not uncommon but the relationship between the two remains controversial. "Forced normalization" refers to the apparent normalization of EEGs in patients with epilepsy following drug treatment. The term was coined in the 1960s by Heinrich Landolt who noted that while EEG normalization resulted in the desired improvement of epilepsy symptoms, it was in some patients accompanied by the emergence of behavioral disturbances or "alternative" psychoses.
