Description:
Andrea de Jorio's La mimica degli antichi investigational gestire napoletano (Gestural expression of the ancients in the light of Neapolitan gesturing) was first published in Naples in 1832. It soon became famous for its descriptions and depictions of Neapolitan gestures, but it has only recently been recognized as the first ethnographic study of gesture. The book treats gesture as a culturally established communicative code, analogous to language; and with reference to an explicitly defined cultural group, it describes the gestural expressions of ordinary people as they are used in everyday life.

Adam Kendon has annotated his translation to make the book fully accessible to the modern reader. A lengthy introductory essay provides an account of de Jorio's life and work, analyzes that work in great detail, and reveals how de Jorio's book relates to the cultural and intellectual climate of early 19th-century Naples.
