Description:
Between July 1851 & January 1859 Dickens published two of his greatest novels, "Bleak House" & "Little Dorrit," as well as his most urgently topical one, "Hard Times." Throughout these years he was also actively engaged in editing his popular weekly journal, "Household Words," for which he wrote, apart from his regular Christmas stories, some seventy full-length articles & co-authored at least two dozen more. This third volume of the first-ever fully annotated edition of Dickens's greatest journalism presents over sixty of those "Household Words" articles written by Dickens alone. Dickens writes(sometimes scathingly, sometimes hilariously(about mid-Victorian social concerns & social follies, several of which may seem familiar to today's readers: government incompetence & mismanagement, civil service inefficiency, the glamorization of criminals, the excesses of puritanical social reformers, the scandal of homelessness in London's streets, the deleterious English obsession with class, & the irresponsible or unethical behavior of MPs. Interspersed with Dickens's more polemical & satirical writings are others that richly demonstrate his brilliance as an investigative journalist. Still others are specimens of dazzling reportage. Also included are personal essays in which Dickens recalls childhood terrors & delights, summer holidays in Broadstairs or Boulogne, & travels with friends in Genoa & Paris.
