Isolated in a primitive cabin, overwhelmed by daily drudgery, Cindy is a devoted mother but is filled with longing for a different kind of life. Like the women who lived there before her, Cindy knows there must be something outside the Pocosin, the marshland that surrounds her home.

On occasion, the ghosts of these women appear to Cindy, and she understands that she is not alone. The path her life has taken is already well worn by the women who lived on the farm before her. Yet, even in death, these women were unable to leave. Cindy must decide whether to continue living the life others expect of her or to live for herself. But freeing herself from the only life she knows also means severing ties with her family and risking the fate of her small daughter, Callie.
