Description:
This is the biography of the wife of the twenty-seventh president of the United States. Encouraged by his very ambitious wife, Taft ran for president in 1908 and won over the Democratic candidate, William Jennings Bryan. Before suffering a severe stroke only two months after she became First Lady, Helen Taft was a skillful White House hostess and thoroughly enjoyed her position. During her tenure, she set a new precedent by hiring a staff to prepare meals in the White House instead of bringing them in from restaurants. Her most lasting memorial is the famous Japanese cherry trees planted around the Tidal Basin -- 3,000 were sent at her request by the mayor of Tokyo, and about 100 donated by U.S. nurseries.
