Description: The People of India project, a massive exercise carried out by the Anthropological Survey of India, has generated a wealth of information on the hundreds of communities which exist in this country. These communities are presented in alphabetical order for easy reference, and the subjects covered in each case include culture, location, language, script, biological variation, food habits, rituals, work practices, educational level and impact of development. This volume presents a quantitative profile of Indian society in terms of selected cultural traits. It forms an important part of the massive People of India project. In all, this book presents 392 cultural traits, divided into six parts, namely identity, ecology, social organization, economy and occupation, linkages, and development processes. As a companion to the Anthropological Atlas in this series, this volume highlights the spatial distribution of cultural traits across the states and union territories of India, revealing heterogeneity, distribution and linkages at both local and regional levels. This is an important work of reference for all anthropologists, sociologists and human geographers, most particularly those who study India's communities in modern times.
