Description:
As a young man with uncertain prospects, Jim Morehead was not unlike thousands of other young men who came of age during the depression. A product of hardscrabble farming in Oklahoma, he enlisted in August 1940. After successful completion of pilot training in April of 1941, Second Lieutenant Morehead gained experience flying P-36s and P-40s as his unit prepared for overseas duty. Following Pearl Harbor, the squadron deployed for the South Pacific, sailing on December 21, 1941.
Expand description
On February 6, 1942, Morehead earned the first of two Distinguished Service Crosses for his actions in his initial combat mission. More combat quickly followed along with his first victories: ultimately his tally would include four Betty bombers, three Zero fighters and two more victories following reassignment to Europe.
