Description: In 1993, Rachel Abramowitz wrote a cover article for Premiere entitled "The Company of Women: An Oral History" for the magazine's special Women in Hollywood issue. Her article sparked a firestorm of attention. Here were some of the most famous, most powerful, and most outrageous members of the film industry going on record with their war stories -- an interconnected community of friends, colleagues and competitors eager to tell how they had held their own in a male dominated business world.

In Is That A Gun in Your Pocket?, Abramowitz builds on her ground breaking article and assembles one of the most riveting casts you're likely to read in fiction or non-fiction. She captures the varied and individual stories of why these women came to Hollywood, the pitfalls they faced, and how they earned their success. She sets their histories in the broader social context of women challenging men for the top positions in every work place, not just the glitzy realm of movie-making, and gets to the hard and universal truths of being a working woman in America these last 25 years.

Abramowitz's insight and research makes for a fantastic romp through every major studio, every agency, hundreds of sets and backlots and dressing rooms. Here, in their own candid and provocative words, are Jodie Foster, Penny Marshall, ICM superagent Sue Mengers, studio head Sherry Lansing, director Elaine May, writer/producer Polly Platt, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, Brooke Sheilds, Paula Weinstein, Nora Ephron, Lynda Obst and many others. Their stories are pure Hollywood.
