Raymond Hutchings, who died in November 1998, was editor of ABREES (Abstracts Russian and East European Series - previously ABSEES). He worked as a sovietologist in the British Foreign Service (Moscow 1954, 1957-9, 1961 and 1963). He taught at the Universities of Maryland, Southern California, Pennsylvania State and Texas, and held research posts at Chatham House (London) and the Australian National University. He was listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World, 1997. His publications included: Soviet Economic Development (two editions); Seasonal Influences in Soviet Industry; The Soviet Budget; The Structural Origins of Soviet Industrial Expansion and Historical Dictionary of Albania. With the last-mentioned book he returned to history, the subject in which he gained a prize from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1943.
