Description:
The Kingdom of Benin came into contact with the Portuguese in 1485. From then on, Benin traded with several European nations, supplying ivory, slaves, and various products in return for copper and other goods. Benin was defeated by the British in 1897. The treasures from the palace of the king, or oba, including beautiful brass and ivory sculptures, were taken to Britain. Today, however, the kingdom has been restored and the Oba of Benin lives in Benin City, Nigeria.
