Description:
Landmarks in European Literature is a three-book series about the major authors of European literature and their works, from ancient times until the 20th century. Landmarks in English Literature is a survey of the major British and Irish authors from Chaucer to the Modern period, together with explanations of how the three main genres of literature -- fiction, poetry, drama -- actually work. Landmarks in Continental European Literature discusses thirty-two key works of European literature from Dante to Brecht, translated from six European languages into English, putting them into the contexts of their time and place. Landmarks in Classical Literature surveys the most influential authors of ancient Greece and Rome, and says something about their environment and about translations of their work.

All three books are aimed at the "general reader" and at students coming to these works for the first time -- or to those who have read some of these works but now wish additional guidance in their reading, and wish to understand the context in which the "great books" were written. All three base their discussions on texts in English, readily available in well-edited paperback editions. The prime purpose of Landmarks in European Literature is not to be a substitute for reading the great books of Europe, but to help and encourage readers to explore and enjoy this great literary heritage for themselves.
