Description: In an examination of the future of international security, Paul Rogers argues that there are two fundamental issues that will largely determine the evolution of conflict: the widening gap between rich and poor and the environment. Taken together with the proliferation of military technologies, the book argues that attempts to maintain the present world order in the interests of a minority elite, mainly in the West, are unlikely to succeed and will instead increase the risk of conflict.

It calls for a radical re-thinking of western perceptions of security that embraces a willingness to address the core issues of global insecurity. The author draws on examples from around the world, covering both the North and South. Topics covered include the legacy of the Cold War's proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; the impact of human activity on the fragile ecosystem; the growth of hypercapitalism and resulting poverty and insecurity; the competition for energy resources and strategic minerals; biological warfare programs; and paramilitary actions against centers of power.
