Oscar Colunga, a Connecticut detective, has already begun to believe that there's a serial killer loose on his turf, since several female bodies have been discovered at the Nepaug Reservoir. With few clues to work with, he's stymied until a woman calls and tells him she believes she's reading the killer's memoirs -- but she won't leave her name, apparently terrified that the killer is watching her.
Colunga now has to identify the woman and the killer. Haunted by the memory of his daughter's death by a serial killer, Colunga vows that he'll not let another woman die ... but will he find Megan before the murderer realizes he's told Megan too much, and kills her to keep his secrets?
