The work of Michael Faraday (1791-1867) changed the face of modern science and his discoveries almost immediately saw wide use in everyday life. Faraday conducted chemical experiments with chlorides (used today in dry cleaning), benzene (an organic solvent and fuel), and steel alloys (used widely in construction, transportation, and for the production of many household goods). Beginning in 1821, he concentrated on studying electricity and magnetism, and invented the electric transformer and the dynamo (electric generator). He is also credited with the invention of the electric motor. Colin Russell introduces the basic concepts involved in understanding Faraday's work, and provides a wonderfully informed discussion of the scientist's everyday life.
