Description:
When Eugenie Melnyk retired she wrote a handful of charming mysteries set in her native Montreal. But her newfound time was occupied by a more involving project. Inspired by a close friend who was a Ukrainian Jew and had been caught up in the Nazi invasion of his land in World War II, she began work on the novel that became My Darling Elia. Seven years later, much of them spent in gathering the research that makes her story so uncompromisingly real, the book was finished.
Expand description
We follow Elia as he searches for his pregnant wife through war-torn Eastern Europe, barely escaping death at Baba Yar, encountering suspicious partisans, posing as a Nazi soldier, witnessing the Polish ghetto and ending in a concentration camp. The war over, he follows the trail to Montreal -- where it fades away. But two women and one teenage girl hear his story and join the hunt. At its unexpected end, we do believe that love and hope can some how survive horror and inspire good.
