Description: Boats, rafts, and canoes were important to many of the first people who inhabited North America. Some people hollowed out logs to make canoes. Others split logs into planks and tied them together. Still others stripped bark off trees to make canoes or made boats out of animal hides, grass, or reeds. As these Native Americans traveled on rivers, streams, and, in some cases, the ocean, they encountered difficulties that caused their crafts to either be abandoned or destroyed. Modern-day archaeologists have discovered the remains of many of these crafts, which tell us much about the way of life of the people who navigated in them.
