Description: This book addresses two main issues in the field of neuroglia in the aging brain: The role of glial cells in normal aging and the role of glial cells in pathological aging, ie. neurodegenerative diseases. The book covers several key points: cellular, molecular and metabolic changes in aged astrocytes; the role of astrocytes in synaptic remodeling and synaptic pathology; the responsiveness of astrocytes to brain injury or neurotoxicity, ie. reactive gliosis; interaction of neurotrophins and astrocytes in aging and regeneration. These subjects will prepare the reader for the section on the Advances in role of astrocytes in pathological aging: neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzeheimer's disease, Parkinsonism, epilepsy and Huntington's Chorea.
