Description: Anthony Giardina has two novels, a story collection, and a half-dozen plays under his belt, but none of them as controversial as Recent History, a novel inspired by a letter to a newspaper editor. In response to an article on gay lives, the letter writer told of growing up with a father who acknowledged he was gay when his son was a teenager. "The letter's quiet intensity and hard-won wisdom intrigued me", says Giardina, who began writing a story about just such a father, told from the son's point of view.

But isn't Giardina invading the turf of writers who have more experience with this subject? After all, he is straight, married, and a father. How can he get into his protagonist's head and make Luca Carcera (who has seen sex shatter the status quo and who wonders if it will eventually destroy his own carefully constructed life) believable? "What interests me isn't simply sexual identity, sexual politics, or sexual awakening", says Giardina. "I track the movement of men's lives from the place where what's important is dominion -- the settled claim -- to the place where what's important is the ability to open ourselves emotionally, whoever our partner may be". The result? A bold, bracing exploration of what it means to be a man.
