Jalalu'l-Din Rumi, best known for founding the order of Merleviya, or "Whirling Dervishes", and the greatest of the Persian mystical poets, was born in the Northern Persian province of Khorasan in 1207. At the age of twelve his father -- a revered theologian and teacher -- led his family through Baghdad to Mecca and finally settled in Turkey. After his father's death in 1230, Jalalu'l-Din turned toward the traditions and spiritual upliftment of the blossoming Sufi tradition and went on to write a magnitude of inspirational poetry that has left him the undisputed spiritual leader of the Islamic mystical tradition.
