Description: Germans were one of the largest immigrant groups in colonial America, yet there are very few studies of their cultural transformation. Serving, Two Masters explores how the Moravian Brethren who settled in Salem, N.C., came to think of themselves as Americans.

The Moravians who first arrived in America actively maintained their connections to those who remained in Europe. They placed the authority for deciding religious, social, and governmental issues across the sea. But, as the children born in Salem became acclimated to more and greater freedoms, particularly in the wake of the American Revolution, a series of disputes revealed the stresses of transatlantic governance.
