Uri Shulevitz (b. 1935) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books, the winner of the 1969 Caldecott Medal, and the recipient of multiple Caldecott Honors. He was born in Poland and survived the 1939 bombing of Warsaw. He lived in Paris and Israel prior to immigrating to the United States in 1959. Richard Lourie (b. 1940) is an American author, literary critic, and translator from Russian and Polish. He won the 1971 Joseph Henry Jackson Prize for fiction for his in-progress novel Sagittarius in Warsaw. He also served as Mikhail Gorbachev's translator for the New York Times.
