A volume of poetry, well known for its verse about the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon a decade earlier, particularly the long, humorous ballads, The Shooting of Dan McGrew and The Cremation of Sam McGee. Robert William Service (1874-1958) was a British-Canadian poet and writer, often called the Bard of the Yukon. Born in Lancashire of Scottish descent, he was a bank clerk by trade, but spent long periods travelling in the west in the United States and Canada. His epic, rhymed, often humorous poems about the West's wilderness, Yukon gold miners, and World War I show the narrative mastery, appetite for adventure, and eye for detail that enabled him to bridge the spheres of popular and literary audiences. He left behind a legacy of Yukon poetic drama, which to this day defines those rollicking days of the great Klondike gold rush.
