The Vietnam War is a major contributor to these feelings. Although the war is directly portrayed only once in the collection, it figures obliquely in most of the stories. Ely explores the war from a variety of perspectives -- a sniper whose concentration has been distracted by his thoughts of women, a veteran who lives with his mother in the Mississippi Delta and continually struggles with madness, and a talk radio announcer who is visited by a war acquaintance from North Vietnam. Regardless of the situation, each character struggles to overcome the effects of the war, using sex, literature, and even tennis to reach a "calm place."
