Description:
There's nothing Reginald loves more than the music from his violin. As he rehearses, Tchaikovsky and Mozart sing from the strings. But Reginald's father is the manager of the worst baseball team in the National Negro Leagues, and he needs a bat boy, not a "fiddler". Learning his new duties around the diamond leaves little time for Reginald to practice, so he ends up filling the dugout with music in his spare moments. The players are inspired by his tunes, and begin a nonstop rally that culminates in a game with the Monarchs, "the best colored team there is".

Baseball and music lovers alike will cheer for Reginald as he uses his passion to teach his father that acceptance comes in many different forms. E. B. Lewis's watercolors, dubbed "arrestingly beautiful" by The Horn Book, provide the perfect compliment to this heartfelt story.
