The Chuckling Fingers (which was promoted as the mystery of the year in 1940) is set at a summer estate on Lake Superior north of Grand Marais. The Beckoning Door takes place in a mid-Minnesota resort community. In The Whistling Shadow, heroine Gail Kiskadden finds herself at the center of a vortex of violence and impending disaster in her own Lake of the Isles neighborhood in Minneapolis. The "crying sisters" are actually sister lakes, Big Sister and Little Sister, where Janet Ruell, a respectable small-town librarian on vacation, awakes in her cabin to screams in the night.
