The Biographer's Tale
- Binding: Hardcover
- Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
- Publish date: 01/01/2001
It is the story of Phineas G. Nanson, a disenchanted postgraduate student who decides to study "the messiness of real life" by writing a biography of a great biographer. But he quickly discovers that facts are often unreliable and a whole life hard to put together. No matter where he looks, he finds only fragments: bits of information, bones and husks, boxes of marbles, undated postcards. Trails run cold and mysteries are unresolved.
But Phineas goes on, tracking his subject's journeys to Africa and the Arctic, where the shapes of myth meet the patterns of science. Phineas himself meets others who are building wholes from bits and pieces: taxonomists, ecologists, even travel agents. But they seem only to make his task more difficult. And what of Phineas's own life? What of his future? And where, oh where, is a woman to guide him out of the labyrinth he's led himself into?
Tantalizing, witty, and delightfully rueful, The Biographer's Tale is A. S. Byatt at her dazzling best.
