The carefully intertwined story of a mother and son left near destitute in 1931 Chicago by a father in search of work begins with fifteen-year-old Anton, who is suddenly paralyzed and beginning to doubt God's love. Hajji, a mysterious man, kindly takes Anton and his mother into his makeshift shelter. He comforts Anton with talk of the Seven Truths.
