Description: Virtually all entries in the book will be from the period, 1860-65. The only exceptions will be annotations that the editor provides to make any dated references clear. The book will open with entries detailing Abraham Lincoln's election as president, followed soon after by his inauguration and the confederate shelling of Fort Sumter. The daily entries won't be mere summaries of events, but will make extensive use of contemporary newspaper articles, soldiers' letters and diaries, government dispatches, and other primary sources. Events on approximately 500-600 days of the war will be covered by entries on battles and politics; public statements by generals and elected leaders; and hundreds of entries detailing day-to-day life in the north and the south, away from the battlefield. Such events on the home front as the New York Draft Riots of 1863, the struggle the South endured to feed and clothe itself despite the North's economic blockade, and the feverish war production that the North and South engaged in to confront their adversary. The illustrations will also be drawn from the period, and will include maps, engravings, and daguerrotypes.
