Description: Romantic love enters the lives of the irrepressible Conroy sisters. Ruth, the eldest, begins to notice the charms of the men she sees and reads about, including the school bus driver, Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, the substitute English teacher, and Alan Adair, school hero. She has a bad case of what Big Grandma calls "the family failing". But her sisters are unsympathetic, though Naomi fancies the new teacher herself, and the situation among them becomes chaotic. Finally, Big Grandma takes charge. First she invites Philippe, the grandson of an old French friend, to visit the Conroys for a week. Rachel immediately asks him to marry her. Then Big Grandma whisks the girls off to Brittany, to stay in a cottage owned by Philippe's grandfather, her old friend, with alarming and comical results. And the girls begin to wonder if Big Grandma herself is still susceptible to the family failing.
