Description: In these new poems, MacInnes's characters have become more rooted, but are still restless and edgy. Set against her English North Country landscapes, her focus is now more on the people, on their fragility in the face of life, and on tensions and anxieties. Mairi Macinnes lived in the U.S. for nearly thirty years where she published two collections and won National Endowment in the Arts and Ingram-Merrill Fellowships. Some of the poems in this collection previously appeared in The New Yorker, The Hudson Review, Sewanee Review, The New Republic, and The Yale Review. The essay, "Why Poetry", appeared in The New Yorker. Her novel, The Quondam Wives, was published by LSU Press and The Pebble: Old & New Poems is forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press.
